People and Elephants: Working in collaboration with farmers and Forest Department

In our ongoing project on Community-based Conflict Management (CBCM) in North Kanara district, we have proposed that it is important to institutionalize the crop protection measures and all farmers in the village should participate in it. We requested senior Forest Officers of Karnataka Forest Department to support this initiative through Village Forest Committee (VFC) or Eco-development Committee (EDC). On 18th August 2019, Mr. Sanjai Mohan (PCCF, WL), Karnataka visited the villages in Yellapur and Kali Tiger Reserve Divisions and interacted with the farmers and officers to understand the feasibility of this model. During the visit, Mr. B. R. Patil, CCF North Kanara and Field Director KTR, Mr. R. G. Bhatt DCF Yellapur, ACFs and RFOs from North Kanara also participated in the visit. From WRCS Jayant Kulkarni, Prachi Mehta, Harin Aiyanna and Ravi Yellapur were present. Interaction with Mr. Sanjai Mohan motivated the farmers. The  EDC and VFC presidents assured that all the farmers will participate in crop protection. Local officers have also assured of their support for this model. We shall update more on this as the work progresses.
