Opportunity in North Kanara HEC mitigation project
Description
Wildlife Research and Conservation Society (WRCS) is a Pune-based NGO engaged in wildlife research and wildlife conservation projects. WRCS has been carrying out a project for managing human elephant conflict (HEC) in North Kanara landscape in Karnataka by capacity building of the farmer community and multi-stakeholder engagement. There is an opportunity for 1 position of a Project Manager and 2 positions of project officer on this project.
Project Manager
Desired Qualification
Desired Qualification: (i) PhD in wildlife biology, preferably worked on elephants with 2 years work experience, or (ii) MSc in wildlife biology with 7 years work experience, or (iii) MBA in natural resources management with 5 years work experience
Essential requirement

Excellent knowledge of the principles of mammalian ecology, especially elephants.

Knowledge of HEC wildlife management principles, and experience of managing HEC will be preferable.

Should have good understanding of wildlife management and have the capacity to write management plans.

The project has a strong community-based approach.

The candidate should have willingness and aptitude for working with the community.

Ability to conduct meetings with the community and hold community consultations.

Ability to interact and work closely with government officers.

Should be well-versed with written and spoken English. Ability to speak and write in Kannada will be an advantage.

Excellent project management skills and capacity to lead a team and achieve project targets.

Excellent research skills and should have the capacity to guide research aspects of the project, including research design, data collection, data analysis and writing regular reports, progress reports and making publications.

Knowledge of GIS will be an advantage.

The work will involve considerable travel within the project area. Since much of the work will be done outdoors, 2-wheeler and 4-wheeler driving license is essential.

Should be physically fit and willing to travel in the field on daily basis.

The project manager will be stationed at Yellapur for the duration of the project.
Remuneration
Salary will be as per the qualification and work experience. Field accommodation will be provided.

Essential requirements
• The candidate should have sound knowledge of the principles of mammalian biology, especially elephants. *Experience of working on wildlife conservation, especially HEC, will be an advantage.
• Since the project has a strong community-based approach the candidate should have willingness and aptitude for working with the community.
• The candidate will be expected to conduct meetings with the community, hold community consultations, and implement project interventions in the project villages.
• Much of the work will be conducted outdoors in the field, so physical fitness of the candidate is important.
• The work will involve considerable travel within the project area. Since much of the work will be done outdoors, 2-wheeler and 4-wheeler driving license is essential.
• Occasional night outings will be required to the project villages to participate in HEC mitigation.
• The candidate should have an aptitude for wildlife research. Field data collection, data analysis, and report-writing will be a part of the project. Knowledge of GIS will be an advantage.
• Excellent communication and writing skill in English. Ability to speak and write in Kannada and/or Marathi is essential.
• The candidate will be expected to stay in the project area. One position will be in Karnataka and other in Maharashtra.
